Defending nature in Luxembourg

Carried out by the architects at RECAST, the focus of *The Insanity Defence* revolves around the philosophies and laws related to nature protection, examining the outcomes of their implementation with a particular emphasis on the proposed Nordstad project in Luxembourg. Initially suggested by the Ministry of Spatial Planning to establish the third major urban center in Luxembourg's northern region, the project was temporarily halted due to concerns about recurring flood episodes.

This study deliberately sets aside the human-centered aspects of the project and instead explores three conflicting dimensions of nature protection: the biological attributes of the non-human population, the underlying philosophy of nature conservation, and the related legal frameworks. The research proposes a complementary small-scale approach, suggesting the rewilding of real estate properties to enhance biodiversity saturation in fragmented habitats.
