RECAST proposal published on LINA

The concept of *The Insanity Defence* revolves around the idea of introducing controlled vandalism to promote rewilding in artificial environments. This project aims to define a “third space” in urban contexts, where the space neither fully belongs to the wilderness nor is part of real estate market valuation. By allowing buildings to undergo a process of deconstruction, these structures can transform into habitats for local flora and fauna, thereby promoting biodiversity. Instead of renovating or demolishing ruins, the project preserves these sites, turning them into ecological refuges that help increase natural islands in urban areas, enhancing ecological diversity and reducing extinction rates.

*The Insanity Defence* was initially framed within the context of the Nordstad urban development plan in Luxembourg. As an illustration, the project proposed converting a former factory into a habitat for local wildlife. Looking ahead, the project advocates for presenting the concept of deconstruction as a viable architectural practice aimed at non-human inhabitants. Using architectural tools such as plans and models, *The Insanity Defence* seeks to engage a wide range of stakeholders and the public, promoting the idea that integrating rewilded spaces into urban environments can lead to the stabilization of new ecosystems amidst human development.
